RESEARCH PROJECT: ORGANIZATIONAL ETHNOGRAPHY

ASSIGNMENT: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

REQUIREMENTS AND FORMAT:

EXPLANATION, EXPECTATIONS, AND OTHER DETAILS:

At this point in the semester, you should be learning about ethnographic approaches to the study of organizational culture. To that end, you should be finding journal articles and edited book collections that focus on ethnography as an approach, sources that use ethnography as the approach, and/or sources that discuss qualitative, interpretive, or rhetorical methods of analysis of organizational discourse (if you don't understand these terms, you need to begin reading....).

The sources you use for this annotated bibliography should be related to the THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS of your particular approach and/or METHODS of collection and analysis of "data."

Each annotated entry summarizes a source you have read and are planning to apply to your ethnographic study in some way. These entries do NOT describe sources you plan to read in the future (this means you need to read and understand your sources prior to this assignment).

Annotation should be concise and precise. When I read these entries, I should understand what the source is about as well as how it is relevant to the writer's study.

If ethnographic case studies (published in academic journals) appear in this bibliography, your annotation should discuss HOW these cases support your theoretical and/or methodological approach.

Do not take this assignment lightly. This is not just busy work. Careful reading of previous ethnographies or discussions of ethnographic research will help you figure out how to approach your organization.

Reading about ethnographic approaches and reading previously published ethnographic reports will help prevent you from making major mistakes in your study. Reading about specific qualitative methods will help you think about how you will analyze your own "organizational discourse."

If you begin doing an ethnography without understanding your roles and responsibilities as a researcher, you may encounter significant problems during your study...problems that influence the outcome of the study and the final research report.
